Biggs Cross Country 2017: Day 30 - Albany to West Ossipee

A day of country roads through Vermont and New Hampshire today. Even though we only drove about 225 miles, we still didn't get settled in our motel until 7:00PM!

After Albany, our first stop was Bennington, Vermont. We took a quick look at the Bennington Monument, the tallest structure in Vermont, commemorating the 1777 Battle of Bennington. If you had the time, you could ride the elevator to the top. The street up to the monument is lined with spectacular homes built in the 1800s. Downtown looks great, too! These little New England towns are beautiful, with the white church on the town square.

Then we went through Brattleboro and Keene. Not quite as attractive as Bennington, but quite nice. As it was lunch time, we searched fora Friendly's and found it in Keene. Friendly's is an institution in New England as a place for an inexpensive light meal and, more importantly, an ice cream desert after the movies!

From Keene we headed north to Tilton NH where we stopped at the famous Outlet Mall and found a great buy on shoes!

After a quick stop in Meredith, our old summer time stomping grounds, to look at the lake, we stopped in Center Sandwich to check on the cemetery where my dad and sister Judy are buried in the Vittum Hill Cemetery. We were disappointed that the place was not being well kept. The grass hasn't been mowed and the gravestones are getting covered in lichen. We're not sure who is responsible for upkeep. Maybe I don't want to be buried there after all!

We drove the few miles into what's left of Center Sandwich. The businesses are gone but the Corner House is real busy tonight and the two churches look good, along with library and the arts place. This village is way away from anything and we're not sure why my parents were so attracted to it!

Stayed in a fleabag Econolodge at the corner of 25 and 16. Supper is a Subway sandwich, which is OK!!

Off to Maine in the morning.
