Biggs Cross Country 2017: Day 6 - Colorado Springs to Dodge City, Kansas

Once you leave the Front Range of Colorado, it gets real flat! We headed east on secondary roads (no interstates if we can help it!) We ultimately wanted to get back on US 50. Eastern Colorado is pretty bleak. Its flat, forever, not much agricultural activity. When we turned south from the little town of Kit Carson, we saw a sign for the Sand Creek Massacre National Historic Site. It wasn't on the route I was planning, but a short detour took us there, since we had time. Its really out in the middle of nowhere but a beautiful spot. It tells the story of a 1874 massacre of Arapaho Indians by a troop of US Calvary. Extremely disturbing story.

One our early breaks this morning was a new Love's truck stop, out in the middle of nowhere. Love's is a big c-store/truck stop operation that we a little bit familiar with since they have a new store in Ontario, Or. They are growing rapidly with more stores mostly in the central and east part of the country. A great place to stop!

As we drove into Kansas, economic activity seemed to pick up. You'd occasionally see an oil well, a feed lot, grain elevators. I was surprised to see so much land that seemed to be unplanted.
The city of Garden City seemed to be booming with new hotels, malls and a new campus of Garden City Community College. There is a big Tyson chicken plant, an International paper plant (not a "mill"), a very large feed lot and what we figured must be a supply depot for parts for wind turbines.

Our La Quinta hotel is on the western outskirts of Dodge City so we haven't seen that town yet. We met up with Stones and had a decent dinner at the restaurant next door. We'll meet up with them again on Sunday for church!
