Beautiful sunny morning as we headed up Rt 53 on the way to Duluth and beyond. We passed through more beautiful farm lands and then across the St. Croix National Scenic Waterway. Too bad we didn't bring our canoe!
As we approached Duluth this big black ugly cloud loomed overhead and finally opened on us in a deluge! Duluth is a very industrial town. Its a major shipping port for iron ore mined nearby and loaded onto to these ocean going ships to the processing plants. We saw a sign for Duluth Trading and just had to go check it out. Its a storefront in the old downtown section of Duluth, which looked pretty interesting in spite of the pouring rain. It reminded us of LL Bean - cool stuff but more money than we're willing to spend!
As we headed north up Rt 61, the skies cleared and it once again became a nice sunny day! We visited the Split Rock Lighthouse, one of the most photographed lighthouses in the US! It was built following a disastrous storm in 1905 and served until 1969.
We entered into Canada and survived the grilling by the border guard. We'll back down to Portage in the morning to catch the boat over to Isle Royale. We're confused, went back into the Eastern Time Zone. What?
P.S. Our cooler crapped out today! Plug connector failed. Oh well............
