Not much of interest over this 300 miles. Pretty rolling hills, good roads, lots of Mimosa trees along the highway. Sunny weather. But then, quite by accident, when we got to Corinth we came across the Natchez Trace Parkway. This is a 440 mile road that follows the original path of the "Kaintucks" in the early 1800s from Nashville to Natchez. In 1938, thanks to the DAR, Roosevelt named it a National Monument. The road was rebuilt in 2005. So we followed the road from Corinth about 50 miles down to Tupelo. It reminded us of the Blue Ridge Parkway. The road is designed to be bike friendly- that would be awesome! The road has an interesting story. Back in the day, merchants would float goods down the Mississippi from Nashville to Natchez or New Orleans. Once there, they'd sell their boats or rafts for the lumber and then walk home! When steam power came along years later, they could take a steamboat upstream back home and the trace was no longer used.
We arrived at our Sheraton in Birmingham about 5:30, has a Subway for dinner and checked out the Senior Games registration/vendor area. They were setting up about 500 table tennis tables for tomorrow!
Tomorrow we'll watch some events and see the Parade of Athletes in the evening.
